View Full Version : How To Setup Your Catch Can Correctly

This has always been a hot topic of discussion, hopefully this will make everything clear and simple.

A 'catch can' is essentially just a can that catches any blow-by oil from your PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) and VC (Valve Cover) ports. In our case, we want a ventilated catch can. A stock K20 motor's PCV valve is just that - a valve. It's actually a check valve. It's made to allow ventilation when your motor is in vacuum. When your motor sees boost (through forced induction, of course) this valve will close, preventing any ventilation from your PCV valve. We want this to be open during both vacuum and boost, so that we can get our blow-by to see our catch can instead of the inside of our motor/charge pipes/turbo. We are also going to route our VC ventilation port to the catch can. Here is how we setup our catch cans:

http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/4453/ccdiagram.jpg

PCV Valve, #1. Remove the vacuum hose and this valve. Punch or drill out the guts. Cap off your IM (intake manifold) port, #4, and secure with a small zip tie. Reinstall PCV valve, and connect this to the port on the catch can, #3. Now, your VC breather, #2 needs to be connected to the other port on your catch can, #3. The only thing you need to figure out on your own is where to mount your catch can. Be sure to secure any smaller vacuum lines with a zip tie.

Hope this clears things up! Feel free to rep me, bottom left of my post :thumb:

Also, I forgot to add that adding steel wool to the inside of your catch can helps separate the oil from the air. Definitely a good idea to add :thumb:

Good info for boosted ppl.

could you just put a small filter on the valve cover and a filter on the check valve (when drilled out)?

If you place two 10an bungs on the back of the valve cover, cap the check valve and run the lines to a catchcan, that would essentially work.

we placed a catchcan where the battery use to be, two lines to the valve cover, and two lnes to the oil pan (releave pressure there also)

The bottom two lines were capped for the photos, we didnt have enough time to createthe lines for the car show

You could, but this is about being environmentally safe and doing things properly. Many people have done it, but you have to constantly keep cleaning the air filter, and whatever the excess drips on. Much better off just running a catch can, plus you can see everything that comes out :thumb:

You're letting your blow by just dump to the ground? Lol, at least run a catch can so you can see what you're catching. Plus it's safer on the environment

Awesome. Know how you're going to do it and what can you're going to use?

It's going to be an all custom can. Fit to fill some of the space left over from removing the RSX factory air box. Were going to mass produce them once it's all mocked up on my car. I know that 2 vents are gonibg to come from my valve cover and the factory vent is getting closed off.

Yeah I'm just dumping it to the ground. I used to have a universal catch can but it looked horrible and cheap. Then I got into my tucking and etc and decided to can the can lol

I'd run a can again if Adm here hooks me up with a custom one and I want to run AN fittings to the valve cover. I love that.

I am running two -10 an bungs off the back of the valve cover to a catch can with a -10 drain back to the oil pan .Works perfectly the pcv port on the block is left open and nothing comes out .If the pcv fitting on the block doesn't have a vac*** to pull it open then it stays closed and nothing comes out .I have the valve cover barb capped off and the intake port on passenger side should be capped also with this type of set up .

i plan on running two an fittings off the valve cover to a catch can and one from the pcv valve to the catch can (pcv will be replaced with a 14mm to 10-an fitting so it will allways be open) will that work fine?

vdubkilla
07-20-2013, 12:05 AM
The fittings off the vc will suffice but opening up the pcv will also help vent it more I suppose.I spoke to you at 8th fest about the cc .I was the older guy with the teal hatch and walked over and complimented your catch can. I forget who made it but it was a nice lookin cc I don't think you had it hooked up yet but it was in the bay .I run two -10 an fittings off my vc and am boosted to about 24 lbs my pcv is not open just unhooked it to keep oil vapor out of the engine intake tract .

It was nice meeting you. On your two vc fittings do you have them baffled at all? So it dosnt fill the catch can with alot of oil ? vdubkilla

No no baffles they are just two -10 an fittings welded onto the v/c and my catch can has a drain that drains back to the oil pan so it's a maintenance free catch can no draining needed it drains itself back to the pan .

I'm just thinking if I will be better off to just cap the pcv / or leave it there and not connect the line so it allways closed.since I will have plenty of venting from the valve cover that seems what most people do. Like your setup, or if should connect that to catch can as well it only seems people run the pcv to the catch can when they only use the oem barb from the valve cover.
