View Full Version : Morphines Slowly Spiraling Outta Control Build Thread…

So after many death threats and nagging from a good friend of mine here on the forums Adm_Rsx (Adam), I’ve decided to finally make a build thread to catalog and share this expensive journey towards some serious boost. Little bit of some boring back story here, I’m a college student and paid for majority of this build on a part time salary and the shear will of wanting to finish what I started. The car wouldn’t even be near this stage if it wasn’t for Adam’s input, knowledge about our cars, and late night visits so a huge thanks to him for all that he’s done.

Back in early 2011 my motor decided it had enough and tossed a rod through the block to make sure it got its point across. So began the long drawn out process of saving up to get the car back on the road. I first decided that I had some interest in road racing and would stay all motor. I figured I’d grab a k24 block just for the added tq and displacement. Bought one sleeved it and ran across Adam’s Rotrex build thread. At that point I was still interested in road racing and figured a supercharger with its constant powerband would be a good decision on the track, and Rotrex put up impressive numbers. I pm’d Adam back and forth with questions about which blower to get, different setups, where to buy it from, etc.

Now I believe it was a week or two before I had enough to buy the Rotrex blower that Imports vs Domestics was @ MIR (back when it was Miller vs. Palo) and I saw just how much potential our cars had and wanted to be a part of that. At around that same time my friend was finishing up his 62mm build on a fully built JDM H22 Prelude. Once he finished that out and I got a ride on a low boost tune of 10 psi I knew I had to get out of the bitch seat and behind the wheel of my own boosted machine; so I nutted up ditched the road racing idea and bought a Twinscroll 6266. I had originally intended to just have a fun street car to enjoy on a nice day… BUT fast forwarding to after I got a better job and some more parts started rolling in(Pistons, AEM, Magnus, blah blah) I ditched the street turbo with the goal of hitting the 10.5 index and bought a Twinscroll BorgWarner S400SX 67mm FMW Turbo… Now I’m aware the 62mm may have got me to my goal but I have plans beyond the 10.5 in the future and figured its easier to sell a unused turbo.

Presently as the car sits now, the sleeved K24 is sitting in the bay pretty much N/A awaiting some forced induction…I’m currently finishing out purchasing all the parts to my dual 044 fuel setup and the car will soon be headed to FREED Engineering to fabricate piping an clean up anything I see fit. A cage is obviously in the near future for competition purposes but it’s time I get this turbo set up completed and installed. From all motor- to supercharged- to turbo- to BIG ASS turbo…build is far from complete but this is it’s current state, stay tuned.

Hey, thanks! I really just wanna enjoy all the hard work for now until next race season, which I'm hoping to be ready for. So ill try and keep the power moderate until I get comfortable with driving it...Your build is pretty sick as well though man, can't wait to get boosted as the weather is changing for the better.

Haha right?! Live an learn though I try an monitor everything I can with this new motor now. An yeah I haven't seen too many rsx's with a Magnus manifold, I liked that it has built in velocity stacks so I figured I'd try it out! Was gonna go with a center feed but this should prove fine.

That is a huge turbo! You may want to look into a cosworth headgasket though for the powerlevels and boost levels you'll be running.

Just in doing a quick search in that head gasket I only saw a 90mm bore gasket. And it was only 1.1mm thick. VitViper what gasket are you using? I saw you put some more torque on the head bolts as well, what were those specs if you don't mind me asking.

aLmk
03-28-2013, 10:01 AM
Vit is using cosworth pretty sure. That's why I recommended it. He lifted his head running like 25 psi or whatever. He got a better head gasket, pretty sure cosworth, and torque the arp head studs above their rating to prevent the head lifting. And cosworth is a company that makes formula one engines and stuff like that.

I understand that. But I wanted to know if he used some specific numbers while torquing the head down after lifting. He said it lifted at 19lbs I believe it over 700whp.

Ya I don't remember the exact boost levels but he has a big turbo so it is moving a LOT of air at 19 psi. Isn't arp's rating 80ft/lbs? I think he may have gone to 100. But hopefully he chimes in here.

Yea I believe arp is around 80ft/lbs. I haven't don't a k series yet so I haven't looked that up. That info I think I remember seeing it on his website "myvtecbroke".

Ya I think 80 is he standard torque rating for arp head studs. He over torqued them in an effort to fix his head lifting I think that and cosworth head gasket did the trick.

The standard ARP torque rating for high HP turbo K's using the 3/8" studs is garbage. You will push coolant.

First time I lifted the head was after 22psi boost cut at 80ft lbs on the studs. I retorqued the studs to 90ft lbs and lifted the head again at 26psi boost cut. I then replaced the shitty Cometic HG with a Cosworth HG and new ARP studs, torqued to 100ft lbs. Have seen 26psi with no problems now.

Yes, I just shared some sweet secret info...

I just went thru the same thing or am in the process of it at least ..I lifted the head on my engine on the dyno at 23 lbs of boost 640+ whp last week . ARP head studs were at 80 ft lbs per my snap on torque wrench. I was also running a Cometic head gasket .The head and block were just refinished and have since diassembly been been confirmed straight and true .I now have an OEM head gasket ,Arp assembly lubricant I got from Jegs for the top of the studs as we didn't use it when we put it together and I have spoken to arp and confirmed the torque to be 80 ft lbs on the studs .Funny thing to me is I have run unopened K 20s with only ARP studs to over 30 lbs of boost many many times on stock head gaskets and never had an issue. Therefore I am probably sticking with OEM head gaskets from now on .

boosted_teg
04-28-2013, 11:35 PM
what about using GE headstuds/A1 headstuds? I just had my head slightly lift at 21lbs on arp torqued at 80. im going try a1 headstuds with oem gasket

THe legit fix is to use 1/2" studs.

That's exactly what we had to do in our B-series race car , 1/2" headstuds FTW

vdubkilla
04-29-2013, 10:47 PM
Well machining the block and head at this time is out of the question as it just got together many have used the 7/16 studs w/o issue and I am gonna try it again .I now have all the stuff to do it and a newly calibrated torque wrench so I'm gonna re assemble it with the standard arp studs and hope it holds this time .

PetefromtheStreets
04-29-2013, 10:48 PM
Problem is rethreading for 1/2" studs when the motors built already and in the car.

vdubkilla
04-29-2013, 10:59 PM
Yep and I am not about to pull the engine and go thru all that just yet .I'm gonna try a new gasket , the newly calibrated torque wrench I borrowed from a good friend as mine hasn't been calibrated recently and the arp assembly lubricant .If I push the new OEM gasket then I'll no doubt pull it apart and do the larger head studs. I don't wanna deal with head gasket issues again as I did not think there would be any issues like this after having beat the stock block and head gasket to hell w/o issues in the past.

So to catch people up on everything I ditched my surge tank fuel idea to a sumped 9 gallon fuel cell. So the new fuel setup issssss ---
Dual 044's on -10an feeds
9 gallon sumped cell
Big boy Weldon FPR
Dual Weldon filters
Ktuned pro1000 being fed on both sides by the -10an lines
And a -8an return on E85 and whatever race fuel I decide to use. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/16/u5ubame5.jpg
I decided to ditch the radio since it wasn't working anyway #becauseracekor and installed a arc8000 switch panel, absoluelty love this thing. Best bang for your $$$$, had the shop fab something up. I kept this manifold I was going to use hush hush as I was basically the first person to have it and wanted to put some big power on it. But things didn't work out as planned. It was a new line of manifolds from afi, their ProMod line. Long story short, I'll never deal with them again. Nor will I reccomend their services. After about 7 months of dealing with that craziness, I decided to let the shop custom fabricate everything turbo setup wise to eliminate any and all headaches. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/16/ysudahap.jpg
