Alright so finished the car up today, only one issue I've spotted thus far, should be rather minor... My abs and vsa lights come on after I turn the wheel a decent bit in either direction, and stay on until I shut the car off for a long enough period or reflash the ecu. I still have power steering, and the car drives just fine, in fact I drove it home from my mom's house with no issues. I'm actually taking the car to my local shop tomorrow to have him check what codes it's giving and take a look at the power steering wires along the subframe. It will be much easier for him to mess with them as it will be on a lift, for me to access them I pretty much have to lower the subframe in the rear a little and I just don't feel like doing that today and need to get this thing road ready by Friday. Also need to order brakes!

Couldnt u pull the codes on flashpro
Not that I could figure out. The codes aren't CEL codes, they are gonna be in a different system is my understanding. Also flashpro kinda sucks for pulling codes, I've done it twice before, and the one time it didn't give me any useful information, it just said I had a code, which I already knew lol. Took it to pep boys and found out it was a knock sensor code

Well car is back from shop, turn out the right front speed sensor would work just fine until a hard right turn was made, then it wouldn't work at all until the sensor was unplugged and plugged back in or the codes were reset some other way. But fortunately a new speed sensor fixed the problem, which is a little weird since visually, there was no evidence that the wires were pinched or pulled, even with the wheel turned all the way to the right. But glad it was a simple fix! Time to finish breaking in the motor and start tuning.

Ya, but it will be plenty sufficient for my needs since I don't have access to E85 here I don't need that beefy of a fuel system for my power goals.

So after finishing my fuel return install I now have a misfire in cylinder 4 and eventually a misfire in cylinder 3. This morning I made sure the injector clips were seated properly and the coil packs as well, then I pulled the plugs for cylinder 3 and 4 and they looked rather black, more so than what I'm familiar with seeing, I swapped them and the problem stayed in cylinder 4, but then after idling maybe 20 seconds also appeared in cylinder 3 and my vsa light turned on

Here are some pics of the plugs, best I could get my camera to focus up close:

Definitely get tht vacuum line on there but I can't say for sure that's why. I know the Vacuum line is to give you the 1:1 rising rate. Think an injector got clogged?

Ya the vac line is used for that and for giving consistent pressure at idle, but you are supposed to set it with the vac line off, I don't see how that could cause a misfire though, I'm just idling, not driving around. As for one getting clogged I find it unlikely that that would happen all of a sudden, I have a brand new fuel filter in the tank, and the injectors were cleaned and flow tested like 2 years ago tops. IDK

That if I think it's a fake misfire he can disable that sensor/feature. But I don't think it's fake, the idle is rather rough.

vdubkilla
04-30-2014, 11:47 AM
Why don't you put a new set of plugs in it or just swap the plugs from 3/4 with cyls 1/2 and see if it follows the plugs or even swap coil packs .

vdubkilla
04-30-2014, 11:51 AM
I think I would also just go ahead and do a compression test since the plugs are out.

I have a feeling this is injector related somehow. I will try swapping those as well as swapping plugs and coil packs.

aLmk

I just think it's injectors because this happened right after installing a fuel return. I didn't mess with anything else so idk why those other components would randomly fail.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge on the rail or regulator and if so what the fuel pressure at idle

aLmk
04-30-2014, 05:22 PM

Ya I have a gauge on the regulator, and I set it to 65 psi without the vac line attached. Still waiting on a T to arrive to I can install a permanent vac line.

aLmk
04-30-2014, 08:22 PM
Alright well swapped coil packs and nothing changed, and I had already swapped plugs and nothing changed. Then I swapped injector clips and the car started up, but idled even worse after a short period and wanted to stall so I shut it down, the datalog still said misfire in 3 and 4. I decided to reflash the ecu and start it up again to make sure it was getting fresh codes, but now it doesn't want to start, I think it's because the plugs are fouled. I have new plugs I can put in, but want to wait till my vac T arrives so I can have that installed and hopefully not foul these plugs also. What I'm thinking/hoping is the higher base pressure without the vac line connected (65psi) paired with a larger feed line is causing the injectors to see more fuel than necessary, and foul the plugs. With the vac line connected the pressure should drop to around 55 psi... With a lower pressure hopefully the plugs don't foul. I'm also hoping the tune needs to be adjusted as well... All these things are easy fixes, if it's something other than that I'm stumped :(

Misfire issue fixed! Just needed that vac hose and new plugs... Time to start/finish tuning!

I never ended up using the 5 speed, decided the ratios were too long for me. I sold the gears to PetefromtheStreets and he has them in his trans and I believe he spaced his speed sensor with a washer, but I'm not sure.

Ya I just swapped to a 4.3 FD, but my speedo was still inaccurate even after changing the ratio in flashpro, Vit had to adjust my speedo by 8% which is another setting in flashpro. But my speedo never worked weird, just read a little lower than I was actually going. I would try one washer and see how that works for you.

After close inspection, everything in the trans seems to be just fine other than 4th gear of course. While it's out in addition to replacing 2nd gear, I will be replacing the bearings on both ends of the shafts since I had to remove 2 of them to clean the clutch case anyway. Mind as well replace those since they really have to deal with a lot of forces keeping the shafts together.

Look at how messed up the engagement teeth are for 2nd gear:

Not a fan of the ratios and just with the way things worked out I ended up with an extra 6 speed transmission so I have replacement gears. This actually isn't all that expensive of a repair for me minus me wanting a brand new 2nd gear since it's finally off back order.

I used the CT-e crush tool. And yes it was basically maxed at ~460. I now have a fuel return using the stock fuel rail and it's given me quite a bit more head room.

Well the car is broken again :deadhorse: it lost all it's oil right at the entrance to my neighborhood. Not sure what the issue is at this point... Having it towed to my house, but I sense a part out in the near future...

Well I found the problem... Loose oil filter and oil filter mounting bolt. I think the issue truly is the mounting bolt coming loose. But either way, this is an easy fix! I am sure everything else is fine as I shut things down as soon as I saw the oil light come on, and fortunately I was at idle rpm when it happened. The motor turns over by hand just fine like it should.

Well engine seems to be fine. Got it back up and running with no issues so far. Haven't driven it more than a few minutes though. Did some boosting and it seems to be fine. Probably going to go racing Friday night, so I'll find out then if anything is wrong lol

Nah I've has enough. I've been planning to return the car to stock sometime next summer, and I'm just sick of always fixing the car. It's been fun, but it's time to move on for now. Perhaps in the future I will have another boosted k again.

If only the k transmission was stronger, our cars would be God's of stock motor turbo's. Well sir, I wish you luck

Just curious, but what's the most torque you've had?

PetefromtheStreets

At 250trq I shattered 2nd and bolt ons all motor I broke second. At 404ftlbs I broke 3rd

monjarassi

When I was k24 on a revhard tranny saw 350-375trq easy.

Now on this motor before the SS went, it saw 325-350 trq easy. K20 sucks at building trq like the 2.4

aLmk
09-14-2014, 11:35 AM
Gotcha, ya I'm making around 380-390wtq in 4th gear thanks to Vit's booster and it's ability to build boost extremely quickly with the GT30. I've also launched the car numerous times, roll races seem to put a good bit less stress on the trans.

Also all performance parts will be up for sale within the next few days/weeks. PM me if you are interested in anything.

I'll likely keep the car and use it as a reliable stock dd. I'm going to law school in fall 2015 so I won't be doing much in the car/racing scene till I'm finished with school. But once I settle down I'm going to get some type of project. I will always miss my boostedk20 though.
