I'm new to this support forum and I fear I may get addicted to getting blown on a regular basis. I have only ever experienced getting blown vicariously from watching videos and such and feel that once it actually happens to me I will really be addicted and have to seek further help through other such as blown anonymous. Any of you guys who can cope with this addiction on a regular basis please help. I am totally new to this form of addiction and desperately need to learn best how to cope with this serious affliction so that I may carry on functioning with my day to day activities.

PS
I used to have a very serious addiction to playing the saxophone that took up way too much of my time (3 to 5 hours a day every day), so much so that when I wasn't playing my saxophone I was Jonsin' for it. That proved to be a good addiction though as it brought me a world of band aids and about 15 minutes of fame not to mention paying the bills to get me through college. But life happens and addictions change.

I also think your addicted to saying the word addiction. Lol. I'm in for the build man. I used to play the trumpet and was pretty good. Went to states a few times.

Also as for going on with daily life once blown, you'll just have to do a WOT pull once per drive and you'll survive the addiction problem. :thumb:

Hehehe, thanks man. I get out of trouble here all the time. One of the things I love about Chicago is no quotas. Was doing about 80 WOT coming down asland in a 30 zone about 2a. Saw a cop quickly shut it down. Was too late of course, got pulled over. Didn't have current insurance card or union card and managed to get away with a warning. Times before I have been stopped on my bike racing a Ducati and I know I was doing a buck twenty. Once again off with a warning and a compliment on the bikes. This might actually push me past my lucky streak.

You gotta check out Arturo Sandoval. Über heavyweight on trumpet. Wow.

PetefromtheStreets
02-16-2013, 06:34 PM
Damn. I haven't gotten as lucky but I did try and hit a quick cut off road to evade a cop, ended up going up the wrong way and pulled into a 7-11. He came up did the whole routine and I got a warning from that. But tickets for the rest of my encounters with the law.

hehehehe, I have the link with all the pictures as current. I suppose I could post them individually here if that is easier. I just got my car back today. Quaife LSD, stage four clutch and I can already feel a difference. I love it! In a week or two when my radiator gets back, hopefully sooner than later, I will get the rest finished.
What kind of tires you guys running that have good traction? My last set of rubber was some Direzzas that at first really hooked up nicely for the little hp I had going on. Also, I will be buying a new set of rims and I am thinking of going with a little wider rim than stock. What do you guys run and suggest. I am all about form following function. Not that I don't like cars that are modded to suit their owners I am all about the performance over looks.
The mods my car has current are what I just mentioned plus billet innovatives, Injen CAI, RBC, Hondata gasket and kpro, to the back side I got the PLM header that I wish I would have had welded up because I have to keep vents closed which is a pain in the dick days that rain or when it's cold, and finishing out the exhaust is a 3 inch Thermal which I have grown to love the sound of. Not too loud but definitely not ricey. Going in is a rotrex c38-92 with Junk 2 mani as shown in video clip, All In Fab intercooler and radiator, HR throttle body, 1000cc injectors, and a few other things. All of the stuff in the video came off an EP3 from some guy on the East Coast.
Going to wait on doing the Albin's gearset till I destroy the trans. So I suppose that I should take 1-2 easy and peg 3rd gear? You guys gotta give me advice as I am totally in new territory.

For tires I highly recommend the dunlop star specs, now you'll have to get the zIIs since they discontinued the zIs, but they are supposed to be better. The z1 star specs worked great for me at 370whp.

OEM is 215/45/17. In order to keep a closer speed at to oem at 60, youll need 235/40 vs 235/45 which will havr you going too fast at 60. Check it out: http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

I believe I had a set of those. Direzzas right? I loved them at first. Toward the end of season rear end started to want to come around the front when I'd rip in to corners. Ill try them again. The second season I spun them all day long.
For motorcycles I totally hate donflops michelin or metzlers were the best. I find the same issues with the dunlops for cars apparently. The cornered like they were on rails. I did love that aspect.

SAX JONZ
02-19-2013, 06:37 PM
At the moment I just have blizzaks on stock rims. Wanna keep them where they are but the other stock type s wheels I sold with the Dunflops. I was planning on doing whatever works best. Stock rims are 7.5? Should I go 8 or wider? And if/when I do I would just like wider not taller or shorter profile. I want to keep the same tire height as stock specs just wider for traction.
I really wanna go 15 pound wheels. This is where I'm lost. Wider will be better traction but less rotational mass would be quicker.
Running the biggest rotrex with a set of drag cartel cams I anticipate in the neighborhood of 400, shooting for 5-550. Is that too much to ask of a stock internal K20?

aLmk
02-19-2013, 06:54 PM
I could be wrong but I think there are several 'direzza' tires so the zI or zII star specs is what you want. As for rims stock are 17x7. I fit 235/40/17 zI star specs on my stock rims and they worked well for 400whp 300wtq. 400hp from the k20 is certainly not too much to ask as long as the tuning is solid.

Ok. I'm sure they were the Z1 Specs. At least the tread pattern looks exactly the same.
I read a review on the Michelins that stated the owner thought they were better than the dunlops. 121 these were the tread design on mine.
So stock width or wider rim? That's the real question. I really loved these tires at first. The traction after second season was not as good.

This tread looks more like a slick than does the Michelin. I guess I will stick to these then. For daily summer driving should I stick to stock size or go wider rim and tire combo?

Your pictures and links didn't work.
IMO an ideal rim size is 17x8 or 17x9 as you can fit nice wide tires without having too many fitment issues, unless you insist on being slammed (I am not one of those).

SAX JONZ
02-19-2013, 08:38 PM
Thanks aLmK, sorry about the posts. I tried to delete them but it's not working well for me. I will definitely do a little wider then. Hopefully I get my radiator back and get this kit installed and post up pics and numbers. I am looking to track the car this summer so that is where I am getting to. Not worried about slamming or doing anything to the car that wouldn't improve the handling or acceleration.

aLmk
02-19-2013, 08:47 PM
Ya I think if you're going for big power you should be more concerned with traction than rotational mass. I'm not saying to get the heaviest rims you can find, but I wouldn't skimp on nice wide tires to save a few pounds when you are making 400+whp. Especially for FWD.

SAX JONZ
02-19-2013, 11:14 PM
Ok. I'm going to get another set of them again. I read the Z2's had better wear characteristics and more tread patch contact. Good enough. For the price and seeing that I won't use them all year long and boosting I'm sure ill get maybe a season max 2.
Tire rack has the enkies at 8 inches wide and inch more than stock and ill do the Z2's
I did love those tires when they really gripped. They were the best tire hands down I ever owned for any of my cars.

aLmk
02-20-2013, 12:02 AM
I have the speed correction setting in kpro that's set up for 235/45's.
But the 235/45s have very large sidewalls making your overall diameter between the rim and tire bigger than stock, 215/45. The 235/40 is almost the same sidewall size as 215/45, closer than 225/45.

I just got off the phone with the Tire Rack, they recommended the 235/40 as being closest to stock height. Thanks for that heads up. Now next question. I was told that I may need to roll the fenders. For you guys that have this setup did you all need to get your fenders rolled?

Depends how low you are. I had to roll my fenders all around to fit 245/40 on a 17x9 +42 and I still rub on bumps and steep driveways. Rub meaning tire to wheel well. And i'm not that low. Low enough I guess.

I've been reading other posts here. I hope radiator comes in soon!
Could I ask any of you that have done wider rims and 235/40 tires to post up pics or link me to them? I'm just about certain that I'll go with that size tire on the 8 inch RPF1's in silver unless I could find a better bang for the buck wheel.

Also would like to upgrade suspension. What is excellent quality to go with. Not looking to slam my car, looking to track it. I have heard BC coilovers. What are you guys running and how do you like them?

SAX JONZ
02-26-2013, 09:41 AM
So I found a set of 9 inch 35 offset RPF1 enkeis and pretty nice weight as well. Was planning on doing the 245/40 on them. No issues with rubbing on hard parts like control arms or anything like that? At the moment I don't even consider lowering it as the PLM dumps the 3 inch pipe pretty low to the ground. I drag sometimes on speedbumps which here in Chicago are HUGE as if to deter people with lowered cars because there is no need for that type of height. Seriously.

You can see a pic of it in the op of my build thread shows one of the front wheels after I got my star specs out on and that's the ride height I've kept the car at. Even with as little a drop I have, on these goofy speed bump thingies in the parking kit at school I will sometimes hit my exhaust where dp mates to the catback just slightly.

If his stock rim size is 17x7 and his stock tire was 215/45 he should run a 235/40 if he wants to go that wide. 235/35 will be too low a profile. I am using 235/40 star specs and they for great and hook well. I'd suggest the new star spec zIIs that replaced the zI.

build looks awesome. Question. For you guys running the C38 range, I just installed a c38-81 with the TTS billet bracket and the blower sits maybe 1-2cm from the subframe. Now this is in an EM2 with an RSX subframe and I don't have a front engine mount. I'm worried the motor will move with the new power level, you guys ever had problem with the blower hitting the subframe? I should just not cheap out and get the front mount for reassurance since I have hasport 60a harness mounts.

SAX JONZ

Thanks man. It's crazy, I've never boosted before so I'm anxious. I have heard of many k20 swaps with high hp and no front mount. I can't say whether it would hit the frame or no but you certainly could send them out to change the bushings to stiffer if you have problems.

Si Speed 317

I would definitely get the front mount. It sucks to drop the dough, but God forbid something goes wrong because you don't have one. You'll wish you spent the money on the mount. After all, it's there for a reason! ;) just my .02

Almost went down just before I got there. Was going balls to the wall going tight and twisty down the mountain and as I noticed hill was dropping quick. Very technical corner. I have this paranoia that cars always will cross the double yellow and come in my lane. Well, the timing was bad. I was railing the corner and well inside the line when I saw cars coming on other side. My line was fine but I freaked for a brief second and dropped my bike even more to cut even tighter but was going too fast so hit brake, front slid then rear slid. Scrubbed off just enough speed to pull it off. Nearly shit myself. other than that I wore the chicken strips completely off in rear. I guess I'm improving as a flatlander. I was driving down the street on a lane divided. A guy in a hemi big block dodge pickup heard my loud exhaust and probably thought "Ricer Ricky" slammed on gas to pass me around a car in his lane. From low revs I stuffed his ass in his lane forcing him to slam on brakes to not hit car in front. His truck coukd move! Had it been a few months earlier he would have stuffed me. At light he asks what turbo. I told him no turbo. Rotrex. He smiled. I think rotrex has a future and radiator holds just fine. Lets see if it stays that way. ¤

Good power for 12 Psi man. I make 12psi at 5k-ish. I have a 90mm blower Pulley. So that's why I make that much boost. You could put a k24 crank Pulley on your car and make a couple more pounds if you wanted

What do you rev to? And what peak boost are you planning to make? How do you make sure you don't over spin the blower? Reason I ask is guys on 8th are making like 12 psi tops and they are slightly over spinning he blower at 8600 rpm. Can the larger blowers be spun faster than the smaller ones? Or do they make more boost without needing to be spun faster?

I rev to 8250. That puts my blower into a 5% overspin. I hit 22psi boost cut on the dyno. The smaller blowers can be spun faster then the larger ones but the larger ones supply more air/rpm. I never could figure out why the 8th gens didn't make boost but the kits just don'tseem to do it

I saw him get some and I let it rip. loud as hell and spinning in three gears. As I pulled up to light I saw an unmarked SUV. I knew I was getting pulled over. Three cop cars later and others on the way, thought for sure I was going to jail. I kept it cool and somehow, (union card teacher?) The coolant system sucks in these cars. Honestly my best advice is to get the ktuned upper coolant neck with the filler cap. It will allow that to be your fill spot as it is the highest point in the system. Getting most bubbles out won't be a problem.

build looks awesome.

I believe I saw your posts on k20a as well. I was suppoeed to get you a couple pictures and got sidetracked. I will deff do this for you today to see what kind of clearance I have. I have the innovative 70a or 80a front mount as well

So this is it...I just overheated. Waited till car cooled down after a long walk to gas station. Came back with coolant and poured it in. Starts leaking. Hoses and radiator all good. I guess water pump and I think this is gonna be the money pit. FML in a good way. Hopefully the engine is ok. It still runs. I didn't run it too hot. As soon as light came on I caught it but WTF? So much pressure that it blew the water pump or a freeze plug? Hopefully nothing else.

Well, the setup is pretty stout. All in fab radiator intercooler setup that bolts together. Two fans on it that sound like they could pull the car along if they had to. As far as the air bubble. It's possible but we ran the car for a long time with the funnel attached and it was fine. I am really a noob when it comes to boost. So I dunno.

No ticket. :-) my chances are getting skinny.

I just don't understand. Could the water pump spin the wrong direction and as a result cause overheating keeping thermo closed? I mean yesterday I took friend in car and drove three miles in traffic to highway, needle was perfect. Got on it, it was hot and muggy as hell. No problems. Got on highway gave it hell. Drove at least five miles. Was perfect. Got off and in moving traffic not touching throttle it all of a sudden needle gets just to point where light goes on. I pull over right away. Needle stayed just a tiny bit over half. I stop and leave ignition on so fans are pulling the air nicely with open hood. Then needle went up, not down to 3/4 while car wasn't running. Then, all of a sudden it comes down really nice again and I started up and drove another three miles perfectly normal.
Had to put 6 - 10 ounces to fill back up. This morning another 6-10 ounces later. I can't believe that the air pocket would be that big. This is what I have been dealing with that just doesn't make any sense to me.

So, I don't know what temp sets the fan off but it comes on around just over 1/4 guage. Not much info, I know.
As far as the pocket of air, my filler neck is at the head so I read where to remove the top hose but since filler is there. Dude, I spent at least 15 minutes or more watching the bubbles stop. I figured that since the fans went on then off it was all good.

Maybe I did, till the heater core hose came off from not being secured properly. It was running right where it should be.
So from what I've read, jack the car up so air can find its way out?

That's how I did it yesterday. I drained all my coolant so I could change my lower radiator hose to clear my battery relocate better. It took a while, and you have to be patient filling the neck with coolant as the system even when off and empty likes to 'burp' up coolant as you're filling it. What I did was fill as much as it seemed to want to take, which was maybe 3 qts. Then I started the car, and added coolant as it would take it, of course the car overheated as there wasn't enough coolant in the system yet. I shut the car off, let it cool off for a couple hours, did some other things, then I went back and filled it with more coolant before starting it, again as much as it seemed to want to take. Then I started the car again, added a little coolant as it needed it, which wasn't much. After letting it warm up, the fans cycled on and off twice and my coolant gauge never rose above normal. This was all done in my closed, hot garage. Front was jacked up higher than the rear like Adm is suggesting. Drove the car around the neighborhood and the temp gauge was still normal. Will be driving to work today and see how it goes, but I think it's all set. I do need to check my datalog to see what my exact temperature was last night.

Well, with the exception of jacking up car, stuck a funnel in opening, filled up. Let car run for about fifteen minutes and fans came on and went off. Stopped seeing bubbles and figured it good. Capped it drove it and it looked good but of course it blew the heater core hose off because it wasn't clamped. I'm gonna jack it up and try it again. :-)
The other problem I have is that when I'm cruising car is warmed up and in first and second it hesitates or cuts out with throttle when it gets to certain rpm. Then power comes on hard then same thing so it's bucking a few times before grabbing and accelerating normally. After 10-15 miles of highway cruising it works fine. Any ideas?

Ok, as far as the radiator fans, they come on at 195. Was told that 180 doesn't allow the engine to come up to operating temp. That didn't seem right to me as when you are driving air is being blown through radiator anyhow. But this is not the big problem with my car at the moment so I guess I will let these guys figure it out and then keep an eye on it. I will change the fan temp when I get it back if I have issues.
I hope the radiator is not the problem because to change that to a full size the whole piping layout needs to be changed and that is why I brought the car in to the shop in the first place. All that fabrication I know I could never reasonably do.
I hope it doesn't get to that part but if you guys are having issues then maybe the PO did too and just got frustrated. I don't know. Here I thought I had the trick set up and was going to be driving and enjoying before having to deal with issues like this. I love the power but the hemorrhoids are beginning to flare. I must say. They were replaced with heavy duty studs and bolts. So let's get back ti oruginal and first overheat...the light went on and not a second after I caught it and immediately pulled over. Would an improperly burped radiator cause this so quickly? I mean my guess is that the head gasket gave between the cylinders ever so slightly and then just gave out from there, in fact, it could have already gone when on dyno. That could have been the white smoje I noticed. Probably not. Either head was torqued improperly or overheated just enough to make tge gasket shit the bed. From that point every time I gave it hell the hot air creeped under the gasket just enough to make pressure and overheat coolant.
Of course, I'm just guessing wildly here but what do you guys think?

I would say the head bolts were improperly torqued, if the head was cracked it would overheat always. Since its only under boost it seems the head is lifting slightly due to boost pressure. Get a new headgasket, have the head pressure tested and then re-surfaced and make sure you use headstuds, and be absolutely sure they are properly torqued.

Ok, so quick question. I just checked my radiator coolant level cause now I am a freak about this stuff and noticed it was low. Hopefully it was because it takes a little while before radiator completely fills. I have a sneaking su****ion that I may not have gotten rid of this issue yet. Is it normal that you would have to add coolant after burping a system?

yes fill it again and Cruise. Check level again after its fully cooled

So far so good. Light came on one time in stop and go traffic. Lost no fluid. Got these mounted today.
Apparently, child labor laws don't apply in Indiana. Lol
