Is it possible that cap gave out from previous overheats? Enquiring minds need to know. I'm going to buy a new one but I wonder how these things go bad...

monjarassi
08-14-2013, 09:41 PM
Bad radiator cap

The radiator cap does several things. It

seals the system against the outside world (main seal function) keeps the system pressurized when needed, so as to raise the boiling point of the coolant allows excess pressure and coolant expansion to vent to the expansion reservoir (pressure seal function) allows coolant to return to the radiator when the engine cools down (return seal function)

As you may have gathered from the above section, the radiator cap has three seals, any of which may fail independently of the others:

1. The main seal is the one that seals the cap against the top of the filler neck. Just a rubber gasket that operates just like one on the lid of a pickle jar. Simple and reliable. 2. A failed pressure seal will allow the coolant to boil at a lower temperature, and coolant will be able to travel freely and foamily to the expansion reservoir. This will cause localized hot-spots inside the engine, which can lead to premature head warpage, and may hasten head gasket failure. It will also cause the rad coolant level to be low, just like a failed head gasket. 3. A failed return seal will prevent the coolant from returning to the radiator as the rad cools off, causing a vacuum that can collapse the radiator's hoses. This will prevent the coolant from circulating if the hoses don't re-expand as the engine warms up.

A bad rad cap can cause similar symptoms to a failed head gasket, so it's a cheap first step to try before bringing it in. If you replace the rad cap and you still have bubbles in the coolant (or foam in the reservoir), then suspect the head gasket. If the engine starts to overheat at idle, or in heavy traffic, and the gauge goes down when you rev it, the coolant is probably low.

Moreover, a neglected cooling system can load up the cap with crud and corrosion, preventing proper coolant flow in and out through it. Peel the seals back with your fingernail to check for goop. If you find any, a blast with a garden hose and probing with a toothpick should clear most of it out.

But anyway, a new rad cap is less than $20. Make a habit to change it every 5 years, just in case. It's pretty important.

Ok, let's rewind. I had all new stuff and head warped. Destroyed stock cap, then replacement cap 1.3 bar. Great info btw. I had replaced with new radiator cap before head shaved. Cap might have been damaged from before. I will replace it Friday. Not driving car till then. I guess all is well, we shall see. Car is good. I beat the shit out of it and coolant stays and needle doesn't budge so I guess the cap had fought that previous battle and lost. Not even a month of use. 1.3 bar skunk2

maybe the radiator cap is failing u

SAX JONZ
08-14-2013, 11:52 PM
Yeah, my question is what caused it to fail prematurely. Maybe it got damaged before when head was warped then finally went bad this time around from normal use? I checked it and noticed it allowed coolant to move out of neck in to coolant basin after car was already cold. I'm going to replace it and hope that's the end of it but if it fails again I can't assume it's the cap. Has to be something else I would think. I am going to cross fingers.

Looks smaller than my setup. All I have to do is cross fingers. Cap may have been dead since last round of overheating. I'm prayin that's it. I'm going to set fans to 180 and I think that may compensate for the traffic I sometimes experience. Tomorrow is the day. Put wheels and cap on and take it for a nice run. Will make and post video.

Yes, it bolts to the intercooler. I rode it really hard today, like redheaded stepchild. Put at least 50 miles or more on it. Not once did it get close to half. Running strong like bull. I think I may have it going ok. Once I get those wheels on car we shall see just how quick it is. Third gear wheelspin is insane. Car feels much faster than my bike. Gotta be an 11 second car.

See post 68. Good pic of radiator there.

Well that looks like the same radiator I had and my car constantly overheated with it once it got above 70 degrees outside and even ran hot on cooler days if I beat on the car .I have since gotten rid of that rad and the bought a griffin full size I must say it solved my cooling issues instantly .It did not matter what I did with the tucked radiator it did NOT work properly for a boosted K series this I am certain of and would bet your gonna find the same results when all is said and done .I wish it were not the case but sadly for me it was indeed a long wait for a product that did not do what I bought it to do in the first place and I ended up selling it at a loss and buying the Griffin .

SAX JONZ
08-16-2013, 01:25 AM
Wow. I think you have a strong point there. If I have to change out rad I'm Su Fuk D. EVERYTHING, everything is where radiator would be. Oh well. I drove it today so hard and it was pretty hot. I have no other options at moment. I'll probably sell car if that is gonna be the case.

Alright, so I am experiencing another problem now and I think it is with the TPS. When I accelerated, sometimes it jumps like a wild horse and feels like all of the power is jumping to the wheels and then back off and then again. It's fucking insane, and it is sporadic, driving me nuts. I asked at King about this problem and the guy I spoke with mentioned the TPS as being a problem on some k20's and not others, mentioned trimming it back and after that I lost his advice in a sea of WTF. Any of you guys can elaborate? This is where I am going to figure out a few more things. Some of you guys are amazing at the things you know and not only that the concepts of how they work. Amazing. I'm not looking to be a total gearhead as I need to spend that time on my sax becoming a monster some day. But we all need little diversions here and there, right?

The civic chassis tucks the exhaust in the tunnel better then the dc5. For some reason they decided we didn't need an exhaust tunnel worth a flying fuck. Ive got a 3" thermal r&d but I'm interested in ktuned's oval pipe exhaust that will allow for a little more clerance.

Damn. Which stud? I didnt see u were going to the track. My best advice on a stock tranny and axles is to not preload your tranny before you launch. You can do a small burnout, just enough to clean the tires and warm em up a bit (more or less, depending on your compound). I have a set of, uhhh, i forget. But anyways, the set of tires on my stockies (winter wheels) actually grip very well with a nice street burnout. Typically though, street tires don't like much burnout.

Well, it had been spitting coolant every now and then. I figured it was normal but when the weather cooled down it did worse. So I had looked a little closer and found a hissing sound coming from the neck and not the cap. I think when head gasket blew that it weakened the gasket.

Can the intercooler position be modified at all to fix the problem?

SAX JONZ
06-20-2014, 11:04 PM
It's in at an angle because that is the only way it could be fit. The bumper needed the inside grate removed. The mugen is too thick in that part but if I cut it will mean taking part of that pillar on left side out. May weaken an already thin piece. I guess I will look again but what do you all think? Cut out and deal with it or just run stock bumper?

I had to cut my bumper to fit my intercooler piping, and I am not happy with how it turned out because I had to cut a piece completely out of the grill. If you think it can be done without being able to see the cuts on the outside I'd go for it, otherwise I'd just stick with the stock bumper.

Depends on how much needs to be removed. Do you have the stock bumper beam/support?

Well, depends on your goals IMO. I'm not familiar with DC5 coilover kits, but you want to know spring rates and a wide adjustable dampening range. Lets you dial the car in just right. Quality is an absolute must, of course. 👍

Heard nothing but good things about the Fortune Auto coils for the DC5. The KWs are typically known to be high quality but also really really expensive. AMR would have been a good bet if he hadn't been screwing so many people out of their coils.

Yeah. I like the idea of buying fortune autos myself if they are as good but my money is on quality since I'm only going to do it once. Maybe next season I'll ask to drive a few Rex's so that I can get an idea. I also heard some people knock them too. None of my friends are dissatisfied but I have yet to drive myself.

Questions, you guys done this? Hard lines or braided fuel line?
Also, should just go ahead and do tie rods and ball joints? 120-40 thousand miles on the OD.

The fun of ordering parts! Not sure about the subframe washers either. Regarding your fuel question, we did a fuel return on our FG2. -6an feed, OEM hardline as return. Works great and surprisingly holds power! As for suspension, tie rods and ball joints may prove beneficial - use a visual inspection along with how the car feels to decide if it's worth doing.

Keep us in the loop!

I have had a major issue with removal of rear trailing arm toe bolt. I may need to replace the trailing arm. This sucks balls because as I now see those bushings look fairly stout. As in I doubt replacing the rear bushings with the Hard Race bushing was even a good idea.
Perhaps the fronts will make a big difference but I can't see how replacing the LCA and spindle bushings in rear will even be a noticeable difference. I will post pics of the progress once I get those pieces apart and begin to push the bushings in.
I ordered tie rod ends as they didn't seem to have excessive play but they were loose, probably going to put in new ball joints as well. I had to order new front top hats as the 05-06 ones were a different style. This really had me confused at first. So still waiting on those parts.
Other issues include stuck drive shaft in front that is probably shot. Pictures to come.
If you have any diy's on return line that you could point me to. A few I read were not a good idea and I

Will do. It appears that the kit kseriesparts sells lists those as the parts needed. The rear top hats have their own installed OEM. Through me for a loop. I am just still a newb to many things but learning curve is going up. The recommended setup for the kw variant suspensions is OEM. I guess I could dial in a little camber up front from the bottom bolt as the bolts look like the rear toe bolts. I went with the KW's as they were stainless and do not need to be revalved every 16 months or whatever the normal interval is for coil overs. I will post up a thread as soon as I get a chance with the install.
