So like most I started out with a cold air intake, ran a catless exhaust, then ran a larger exhaust, then bought flashpro, then that was it time to get serious. Like most once you feel power from an upgrade you get addicted to experiment with different tunes different settings to get MOAR POWER.

I dynoed on a Dyno Dynamics and a base flashpro map with CAI, and exhaust but only made 177HP because it was untuned and way rich. Like 11.9:1 LOL that was FAIL! All you have to do is read :paper:

So I started learning how to adjust the fuel map with FlashPro and found a lot of other settings that help make more power HA! Imagine that!

After watching YouTube videos of boosted Civics and seeing those RPM's rev to fuel cut faster than I thought was possible... Yeah it was time to BOOST LOL

I started out with a smaller turbo build I pieced together consisting of a top mount log manifold and a small turbo like .63 AR turbine and .60 AR compressor. Modified my stock fuel injectors and started street tuning and ended up with 344HP on the same Dyno Dynamics.

When I couldn't get anymore power from those mods I decided to look at what I needed for more. My friends said "Dude you have a problem" I agreed with them... I don't have enough boost! :waveyfinger:

I did the whole build myself
(other than the machine work such as boring and honing the cylinders and fitting the oversized valves).

I welded my own intercooler brackets and welded my own 3" stainless exhaust. I tore down and reassembled the whole motor myself in my garage. I surprised myself when it actually started the first time HEHE

And it now has over 4000 miles on the motor

The only way I was able to do this myself was I had the service manual in PDF form for torque specs and reassurance I was putting things back where they go :)

I pulled the motor out in January 2012 and finished April 27th 2012

I love this build. Very well documented, great setup. Puts the 8th gens up on the list!! Btw, what fitting did you have to use on the fuel rail to incorporate the OEM fuel line on the feed side? I need to figure it out.

Thank you! :)

If you're talking about the line up against the firewall I used the factory clip with the hose adapter and all(green clip black hose end and gray cover). The factory fuel line adapter has a barb fitting under the hose. I cut the stock hose off and slid the An6 fuel line over it. I used a fuel injection fuel line clamp to clamp it to the barb. I can post a picture tomorrow.

I am installing a full fuel return system tomorrow. If there wasn't already a how to out there on how to do the fuel return system I would do one. ;)

I was running 10.9:1 AFR between 7krpm and 8200rpm I did not have time to get my fuel map perfect. I was up all night Friday installing fuel return 1pm to 4am. And Saturday I tuned a little bit but did not have time until about 12am I stayed up until 6am doing street pulls. I went to bed at 7am and got back up at 9:30am to head to dyno day.

I love dyno days!! :woowoo:

Here you go. Fuel return line. I actually have -AN6 braided fuel line now. This was fuel injected rubber line I was using as a feed (SAE30R9 is rated to 100psi).

If anyone ever wondered why their fuel line busted it was probably the SAE30R7 which is only rated for 50psi.

Yeah the dude in second place was like I wasn't worried until you kept making more power lol I added a total 5 degrees of timing between pulls 401hp, 417hp, 443hp

Well I was watching my afr and knocks. I was running extremely rich and no knocks up top. My old tune I was running 17 degrees of timing this time I was at 10 degrees and added 5 degrees with live tuning.

What sucks is I made 421hp on 14psi of boost with a boost leak a couple of weeks ago. I fixed my boost leak and ran 21lbs this time and my first pull was only 401hp

Timing is everything lol

Oh, you have the feed routed reverse! How safe is that? Because IIRC the OEM feed starts on the drivers side. Wouldn't that mess tuning up with a reverse flow?

I have never heard it matters. Fuel flows through the whole rail at the same pressure so im not sure where that theory comes from?

Can you link me to an article? I am going to see if I can find anything about it.

No that wouldn't matter at all. Tuning is based off fuel pressure and it doesn't really matter in which direction it gets there. As long a the fpr is after the rail from the feed side your good to go.

Great build! I was wondering if those cams will help out or not? I have been told and read that oem cams are the best but never seen any turbo cams tested.

Si Speed 317

IIRC, this is the low down: OEM cams are best in terms of the yielded benefits, because most turbo cams are very aggressive and the nominal power difference on a DD isn't worth the work.

NA cams on a boosted build? Why?

It was suggested by Brian Crower when I was planning my order for the turbo cams. He stated that the NA cams were making big numbers on turbo set ups by other customers.

I am not convinced as of yet since im running 20psi and only making 443hp. But im also not done with tuning. I am going to dyno tune next week.

Well I will be having a proper burial for my transmission. I knew it was only a matter of time lol

4th gear sounds like tin cans and marbles. It took a beating at the track and several dyno pulls if I had to count I would say 13 pulls above 400HP and around 50+ launches at the track and countless street pulls while tuning it.

I will replace the transmission with one from an 09 si with 9k miles on it this weekend and replace my clutch

Either that or it could use adjusting.

I made some adjustments to my Cmc and it is holding better but 13psi it slips again.
Im going to do the 500 mile break in and see how that does. I should have that done by the weekend.

***side note***
This clutch feels like the stock clutch. I expected more pressure on the clutch pedal but it is about what the stock one feels like. Also it engages very smoothly!!

My competition stage 4 clutch gave my leg a workout in traffic and even though it was sprung it grabbed hard from day one.

Just sayin

I would have done the break in to begin with just to get everything straight. It could be some disk material needs to wear away to bite better against the flywheel. Or does your rear main Seal leak at all?

VTECFRED

Rear main seal is not leaking. I was doing the break in but in 6th gear under very light acceleration the clutch slipped and that raised some concern for me.

Oh Gotcha. I haven't heard too great of things about spec clutches. I have a comp clutch twin disc and in all reality it isn't that bad once it's adjusted properly. I'd say it feels like a comp stage 4 pressure wise. But engagement is pretty instant. But it's street-able.

So here is an update. I adjusted my Cmc. After that I got a lot more pedal range and the feels better.

My clutch seems to be grabbing more but still feels weak compared to competition clutches I have owned in the past.

I am now at 300 miles of my 500 mile break in. The real change I have noticed is right before full engagement the clutch is beginning to chatter.

Just got off the phone with Jeremy from Spec clutches. I told him two weeks ago when I ordered this clutch their website stated the rated capacity was 520ftlbs and today it says 440ftlbs.

He said let me check with the guys that make those changes. He came back 3 minutes later and said "no, there is no log of the change."

After a 25 minute phone call going back and forth about exceeding the rated capacity I have an RMA but no real comfort in how they are going to handle this situation.

My argument is the clutch slipped on my drive home. That was in 6th gear 15% throttle acceleration not even out of vacuum. Normal driving.

His argument is I am exceeding the rated tq capacity. 390ftlbs to the wheels is way more than 440ftlbs at the flywheel.

I agree, but their website two weeks ago said its holding capacity was 520ftlbs now they are saying 440ftlbs.

I told him I'm not going to be out $600 so we will see what happens when I get the clutch off and send it back to them.

I see me posting my experience in a couple of places like their facebook page, forums and what ever other form of media exposure I can get seen on.

Im sure they make good clutches but I got a bad one and they need to make it right. Plus I would not have ordered this clutch at 440ftlbs I only chose this clutch because it said 520ftlbs

And to put thing in prospective for people on the term thousandths. Your typical piece of paper is .003" so 3 thousandths. So take ~8 pieces of paper and that's how much was taken off the flywheel. That's ridiculous the clutch did that much damage.

How can I verify?

Do a 4th gear pull starting at 5500/6k and video tape it. We'll see if it spins that way. Typically once it starts spinning it'll shoot all the way till redline, but what may be happening is that you're heating up the tires while you spin. That will make the tire stick better, and may start to hook at the higher rpm. Does seem like it's spinning + clutch slippage though. You know what, I have an idea. But, before I say it, what tires are you running up front? Size, type, brand

Si Speed 317
09-02-2012, 01:22 PM
Actually, nevermind. It's definitely the flywheel being poorly resurfaced. When I break loose in any gear, it shoots up to redline awfully fast. Has to be clutch slippage. Str8JDM is running the CC stage 5 (super single) and he's fully built motor and tranny putting out over 700whp on race gas. And it holds.

Just because his rpms don't shoot to redline doesn't mean he isn't spinning. I had an instance during tuning on race gas where I thought my clutch started to slip near the top of third gear. I happened to be datalogging at the time and Vit looked at it and thought it was tire spin. I tend to agree with him because when a clutch slips it tends to keep slipping, whereas I did a run later in the day when it was hotter outside and I didn't spin/slip clutch at all. My logic being that the temperature and ability for the tires to grip would not matter if the clutch was slipping, it would just slip. It could be his tires trying really hard to keep traction as best they can and slipping for just a bit.

I was told that E85 doesn't detonate so you have to rely on more than knocks to tune it safely.

I have done a street tune on my car for 93octane and now E85.

But I'm going to dyno tune on E85 :)

Better luck next time.

Fred, were u power shifting when u broke it?

VTECFRED
10-07-2012, 09:37 AM
No I was in 4th hovering around 4krpm then started to ease into it until about 5500rpm then I mashed it and then it broke.

When it broke it went to redline I thought it was just time to shift so I went to 5th and it didn't sound right or feel right. I looked at my speed and it said 0mph

4th is gone

I looked through my datalogs and this was the first dyno pull and it hit 22psi and held but all the pulls after this dyno pull were at 15psi so I didnt have a boost leak until after this dyno pull. This was my lowest reading of the day too at 475HP. My later pulls I ended up with 486HP@15psi
"Rubber went flying" LOL

So I'm curious.

Ur on the pl manifold, have u experienced any boost creep issues?

I know 2 guys here locally that are on crsx n have the same manifold and are having tuning issues that the manifold seems to create boost creep that's uncontrollable. Care to share info.

I read that your tires spun on the dyno. Here at our local dyno a friend dyno'd his v6 turbo hatch on 15" street tires. The car made 700/500 whp/trq. Having the car strapped down well made all the difference. But nonetheless 486 on 15lbs is dope. So I could only imaging upper 500's to 600's coming from 22psi.

I'm on a 44mm WG on a 8lb spring and without boost control it "creeps" to 10psi max. I have no problems with boost creep. Other than that I have a 1/4" line going from my distribution block to the bottom of the wastegate and a 3/16" line to the top from the boost controller. I don't know if that is even significant enough to make a difference.

The dude said he would have to turn the dyno around if I wanted to do another 22psi pull lol but after that first pull I ended up with a boost leak some where.

But since I broke 4th gear again right after I left the dyno I haven't worried about it :banghead:

I think because the rollers with the texture were on the rwd side and it gets better traction when fwd is rotating into that roller vs when it rotates into the smooth roller ?? Just my observation/guess

Happened last time I got on the dyno with a different vendor. They did all the rwd first then moved the ramps to the other side of the dyno for fwd.

My son said the dyno read 572HP but then the guy clicked something and changed it to 475HP so I'm going to call and ask if that's true.

I didn't see this question. I have a hks ssq 3 blow off valve that's how it sounds I was told. There may be a small amount of compressor surge at low boost or right after blow off.

My hybrid racing timing chain tensioner broke. I do not believe it jumped time. I have recovered all the pieces from my oil pan and oil pick up.

Hybrid sent me a new and improved version of their k series tensioner.

The problem is I have to pull the motor because it looks like the top bolt to the timing chain guide on the left came loose and has been moving around and ruined the threads.

Wow, how does that happen? Glad to see they sent you a new one. What's so special about the new one vs their old one?

I asked hybrid to explain.

" The silver plug is pressed in and is retained with a spiral retaining ring. What makes this unit much different from the last one is that the retaining ring is held in a double blind groove. The last unit used a typical groove in the bore. That lead to high frequency pulsations ejecting the ring and eventually the plug too. We had issues finding the exact cause that lead to the pulsations as the ring manufacturer didnt have much helpful data. we were, however, able to remedy the issue. The double blind groove prevents such ejection issues."

I have said my prayers bro lol and yes I am procrastinating on the Transmission :o
It looks complicated and I know it will be a month between disassembly and assembly so lots of time to forget stuff.

Keep your PM box clear my friend because I will have questions hehe :p

***UPDATE***

I am pulling my new transmission apart this weekend and sending the gears off next week to 300below to be treated.

Next week I'm putting my car on the trailer and taking it to my friends garage to try and fix the timing chain guide without pulling the motor. If that is successful I will be driving her again (with 4th gear broken) :-)

Then I will just be waiting on the gears to cone back and reassemble the new transmission and drive it to my boss's house to install the new transmission.

It should be done by the end if next February. ;)

***Race season upgrades***
15" Rota slipstreams with 24.5 slicks

My goal is to beat my time this year of 12.9s@120mph on street tires.

Pictures will be forthcoming

Sent using my Galaxy S3
Ok, they are CP pistons. I saw your part number in the OP, but when I search for these and look at them on their site, under the C/R with .040'' it says FT. Do you know what that means? For some of the pistons it gives a normal comp ratio. I'm just a bit confused. I want to purchase some pistons and rods here soon, a long with a short block to build in case mine goes. I would like to be in the 10.5:1 region as I do not really like the idea of going super low compression because I'm not building an all out race car. Given your experience would you suggest CP and do you like your comp ratio? Do you think CP pistons are better than JE, wiseco, etc? Also what do you think about rods?

Thanks!

VTECFRED
06-17-2013, 01:04 PM
FT means flat top which is what you want for boost. They are close to 10:1 but I went with a thin head gasket so the CP tech dude said I would be around 10.5:1 :D
Just make sure they are forged. Weisco vs JE vs CP I couldn't say one was better than the other. All three are used in high horsepower applications and all have proven performance. The coatings you can get with them is another story. I didn't get the ones with a coating.

As for rods. Depends on your power goals. I like rods that are shotpeened and forged. I went with blueprint racing H beam rods. They have proven to be worthy. My last dyno was 570+hp and I was spinning on the dyno.

I hope that helps

It seems most quality rods, even h beams, are shotpeened and forged.

Ya thanks for the input. I wonder why they put FT but don't also put the comp ratio  Why is flat top better for boost?

VTECFRED
06-17-2013, 02:45 PM
Well Flat top in general are lower compression. I don't know why CP just didn't list their compression ratio instead of listing it as FT :giggle:

When I was doing my build I had to call and ask them what the compression ratio was on those pistons.
